Where it comes from

The story of Aayan

Aayan rose very fast in Indian and Pakistani naming from around 2010, part of a wave of short two-syllable boys' names — Aayan, Ayaan, Vivaan, Rehan — that displaced longer traditional forms. South Asian emigration carried it to Britain and America, where it appears in the registers from the 2010s and is in current use.

Meaningscholars disagree

time, era; solstice

Two routes. The Arabic ayyan or a'yan carries senses of time and of notable persons. The Sanskrit ayana means 'path' or 'course', and names the solstices — uttarayana and dakshinayana, the sun's northern and southern courses. Both are genuine and neither is dominant.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aayan went to 108 boys in 2025, but Ayaan, Ayan and Ayyan and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 1,129, which makes it the 297th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,274 places above the chart.

and 1 rarer spelling.

About 1 boy in 1,513 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 15,816 for Aayan itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The solstice reading is concrete and genuinely striking.
  • It is current across both Arabic-influenced and Sanskrit-rooted naming.
  • The end stress gives it a strong rhythm against a front-stressed surname.
What to consider
  • The origin is genuinely split between two unrelated traditions.
  • At least three spellings of the sound are in common use.
  • The doubled a will confuse English readers.
