Ayan
Masculine · “depending on the tradition: "path”
Ayan is given to both — 4,091 boys and 851 girls since 1880. See Ayan as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Ayan is one of those short names that several unrelated languages arrived at independently — Sanskrit, Somali, Arabic, Turkic — and each community pronounces it as if it had always been theirs. Two open syllables, no consonant clusters, nothing to soften or shorten. In American records it is a recent arrival, still gathering strength, and most concentrated in the big immigrant gateways of California, New York and Texas.

The story of Ayan
Ayan is less one name than three that met at the same four letters. The Sanskrit element ayana, "path" or "course", is ancient and well attested in Indian compound names, and Ayan is used across northern India, Bangladesh and Pakistan today. Somali families use Ayan and Ayaan for the word meaning "good fortune", and the same spelling turns up in Turkish and Kazakh from an Arabic root meaning "evident, notable". Its appearance in US records tracks migration from South Asia, East Africa and the Middle East over the past half-century, which is why it is strongest in California, New York and Texas.
Meaningscholars disagree
depending on the tradition: "path, journey" (Sanskrit), "good fortune" (Somali), "evident, well-known" (Turkic and Arabic)
Three serious readings, each belonging to a different language family. In Sanskrit, ayana means "going, path, journey" — the element behind Ramayana and Narayana. In Somali, Ayaan means "good fortune, luck", and the spelling Ayan is a common variant of it. In Turkish and Kazakh, ayan carries the sense of "evident, manifest, well-known", drawn from Arabic. Which one applies to a particular child depends entirely on the family, not on the spelling.
Pronouncing Ayan
ah-YAHN
Two syllables. South Asian families often place the weight on the first, AH-yaan; Somali and Arabic-speaking families more often on the second, ah-YAHN. Both are correct, and either is easy for an English speaker once heard.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ayan went to 338 boys in 2025, but Ayaan, Aayan and Ayyan and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 1,129, which makes it the 297th most-given boys’ name of the year — 465 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 1,513 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 5,053 for Ayan itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Kelton test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ayan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kelton climbed just as high around 2002, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kelton's path sketches the road Ayan is walking now.
Ayan is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Four letters, two open syllables, and it reads the way it sounds — no silent letters, nothing to explain on a form.
- Already at home in South Asian, East African, Turkic and Arabic-speaking families, so it travels without translation.
- Short enough that it needs no nickname, which keeps the name the child is called the same as the name on the certificate.
- Familiar to many American ears through its resemblance to Ryan, without being a name anyone else in the class is likely to have.
- The competing spellings are the real friction: Ayaan, Ayyan and Aayan are all in use, so people who know the name may still write it back to you differently.
- Because it reaches English through several languages at once, there is no single meaning to give when someone asks. That can be a pleasure or an annoyance depending on how much you wanted one answer.
- In Somali usage the Ayaan form is given to girls as well as boys, so a Somali-speaking reader may not read it as male on sight. In US records it is a boys' name.
- Expect occasional mishearings as Ryan or Aiden, especially over the phone or in a noisy room.
