Erika has two true etymologies and they have nothing to do with each other. One is Old Norse: the feminine of Eirikr, from ei, ever, and rikr, ruler. The other is botanical Latin: Erica is the genus of the heaths and heathers, from Greek ereike. A name can be a homonym of itself, and this one is.

Where it comes from

The story of Aarika

The two etymologies met in English and were never separated. Scandinavian immigration brought Erik and Erika to the United States in the nineteenth century; at the same time English horticultural naming was producing Heather, Bryony, Erica and Veronica from botanical Latin. By the twentieth century nobody could tell which family a given Erica belonged to, and it stopped mattering. The doubled a of Aarika belongs to a third and later story. In Arabic and Sanskrit transliteration a doubled vowel marks length and carries real information: Aaminah, Aaditya. In American respelling it marks nothing at all, and is used because it makes a familiar name look unfamiliar. Aarika peaks in 1979, which places it among the earliest of the decorative doubled-a names rather than the 2000s wave.

Old Norse Eirikr, ever-ruler, or Latin erica, heather

The Scandinavian name Erika is the feminine of Erik, from Old Norse ei, ever or always, and rikr, ruler, so eternal ruler or sole ruler. Independently, Erica is the Linnaean genus name for heather, from Greek ereike, and has been used as a plant-inspired English name since the nineteenth century. Both are genuine and neither derives from the other. Aarika is an American respelling with a doubled initial a, a device that becomes common in the 1970s and much commoner later.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aarika went to 13 girls in 2025, but Arika is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 32, which makes it the 928th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,957 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 50,227 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 123,636 for Aarika itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both of its possible origins are real and documented.
  • Ari and Rika are current, usable short forms.
  • The sound is completely familiar.
What to consider
  • Erica and Erika are vastly more common and will be assumed.
  • The doubled a has to be spelled out every time.
  • Two stress patterns circulate.
