The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Daniella
God is my judge
From the Hebrew Daniyyel, combining the verb for judging with El, one of the names of God.
Daniyyel → Daniel → Daniela → Danielle → Daniella
How it traveled
The root is Hebrew: Daniyyel, borne in the Hebrew Bible by the prophet whose book gave the world the lions' den and the writing on the wall. Daniel traveled into Greek and Latin with the biblical text, then into every European language, and became one of the steadiest boys' names in the Western record.
Maren
"of the sea", by way of Marina
Maren is usually explained as the Danish and Norwegian form of Marina, which comes from the Latin marinus, "of the sea". A second tradition treats it instead as a Danish development of Maria — a name whose own meaning has never been settled. Both readings are taken seriously, and in Denmark the two families of names have long been used side by side.
Marinus → Marina → Maren
How it traveled
The name belongs to the Latin marinus, "of the sea", which gave the Roman name Marinus and its feminine Marina; in Danish and Norwegian mouths Marina wore down to Maren. It became one of the commonest women's names in Denmark, filling church books through the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries — the kind of name a family reused for a daughter in every generation.

Out loud, and in short
Daniella
dan-YEL-uh
Four syllables are also common: dan-ee-EL-uh. Both are accepted, and speakers of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese will naturally reach for the second.
- Dani — The everyday short form across all the Daniel/Daniela family; also given on its own, and used for men and women alike.
- Ella — Taken from the end of the name; stands alone as a given name in its own right.
- Dana — Occasional informal shortening; independently a given name of separate origin.
- Nella — Informal, family-level shortening from the middle of the name.
- Also Ellie.
Maren
MAH-rin
Two syllables, stress on the first. American families also say MAIR-in, and both are widely accepted. The Danish original is closer to MAH-ren, with a fuller second vowel.
- Mare — The usual family shortening in English; spoken, rarely written, and not used as a given name on its own.
- Ren — Informal clipping of the second syllable, used among friends and siblings.
- Mari — Affectionate form; also stands alone as a given name in Norwegian and Welsh.
- Rennie — Playful extension of Ren, mostly used with young children.

The trade-offs, name by name
Daniella
Strengths
- Meaning is not in doubt: 'God is my judge,' from a Hebrew name documented for more than two millennia.
- Recognizable in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, French and Hebrew — a family that travels without translation.
- Comes with short forms already in real use: Dani, Ella, Nella, Ellie.
To consider
- The spelling will need repeating. Daniela, Danielle and Daniella all sound nearly identical aloud, and people default to whichever they saw first.
- The -ella ending sits in busy company — Isabella, Gabriella, Ella, Bella — so the name may echo others in a friendship group even if the full form does not repeat.
- Dani is unisex and shared with Daniel, which is handy on a form and less distinctive on a sports roster.
Maren
Strengths
- Five letters, two syllables, and nothing silent — most people can say it correctly on sight.
- A documented record stretching back centuries in Danish and Norwegian use, so it is old rather than newly coined.
- Belongs to the wide Marina and Maria family, which offers easy links to relatives' names in several languages.
To consider
- It shares its shape with Marin, Maryn and Marren, so expect to spell it aloud fairly often — and to correct MAIR-in to MAH-rin, or the other way around, depending on which you choose.
- The rhyme with Karen is close, and that name currently carries a slang association in the US. It is a passing joke rather than a permanent problem, but it will come up.
- The natural short form, Mare, is a homophone of the word for a female horse — worth deciding early whether that nickname is one you want in circulation.
