The story of Maren
The name belongs to the Latin marinus, "of the sea", which gave the Roman name Marinus and its feminine Marina; in Danish and Norwegian mouths Marina wore down to Maren. It became one of the commonest women's names in Denmark, filling church books through the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries — the kind of name a family reused for a daughter in every generation. Scandinavian emigration carried it to North America, where it survived first inside immigrant families and later spread well beyond them. Its recent rise in the US is a fresh chapter rather than a revival, since the name never actually left the record.
