The story of Zoriah
In Slavic folk religion the Zoryas are two or three sisters who guard the sky: one opens the gates of heaven for the sun in the morning and one closes them at night, and in some tellings a third guards a chained hound whose escape would end the world. The word itself is entirely ordinary in the modern languages — a Russian speaker uses zarya to describe an actual sunrise. Zora is a standard name in Serbia, Croatia and Bulgaria, and Zora Neale Hurston made it familiar in American English. The -iah extension is an American refinement of the last thirty years.

dawn, daybreak
Slavic zora and zarya mean the dawn or the glow of the sky at sunrise, and the word is ancient and widespread — Russian zarya, Polish zorza, Serbian zora. Zora is a real given name in the South Slavic countries. The -iah ending on this spelling is not Slavic; it comes from the Hebrew -iah names, Mariah and Zariah, and carries nothing. Whether the American name descends from Zora or was built from the Zo- front cannot be determined.

The Lysandra test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Zoriah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lysandra climbed just as high around 1969, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lysandra's path sketches the road Zoriah is walking now.
Zoriah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a single vivid word with a genuine Slavic source.
- Zora is a complete name available as a shorter, more traditional alternative.
- The Z initial is distinctive and immediately memorable.
- Two pronunciations circulate and the spelling does not settle which.
- The -iah ending is American and not part of the Slavic name.
- Zoria, Zoriah and Zora all circulate and are easily confused.
