Zettie
Feminine
Zettie is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 1,458 girls against 10 boys since 1880.
Zettie starts with a letter that Rome threw out of the alphabet and then had to let back in. The Romans decided z was redundant, removed it, and later readmitted it specifically to write Greek loanwords, which is why it sits at the end of the alphabet rather than in the position it occupies in Greek. Every English word beginning with it is a borrowing.

The story of Zettie
The letter's history is unusually well documented. Early Latin had it, inherited from the Greek alphabet along with everything else, and a censor in the third century before Christ removed it on the grounds that the sound it wrote no longer existed in Latin. That left a gap in the alphabet, which was filled by inventing a new letter for a different sound. Two centuries later Latin needed z again, to write the Greek words that were flooding into the language, and readmitted it, but the old position was taken, so it went on the end. English inherited the arrangement without question. That is why the alphabet everybody recites ends where it does, and why almost nothing native to English starts with the letter.

The name is a clipping with an affectionate ending, and the parent cannot be recovered: it may come from the tail of any of several longer names ending the same way, and American families used more than one. No meaning can be assigned without picking a parent arbitrarily, which reference works do and should not.
How the name formed
- A Greek letter removed from Latin and readmitted at the end
- Names ending in -etta and -zetta in nineteenth-century America
- The tail cut loose with an affectionate ending
- Zettie in the registers for both sexes
Pronouncing Zettie
ZET-ee
Two syllables, stress on the first. The doubled t keeps the vowel short, which a single t would not, and the -ie ending is the affectionate one that nineteenth-century American registers used freely for both sexes.

Fashion outlook
Zettie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, bright and impossible to mispronounce.
- The initial letter gives it a distinctive shape that very few names have.
- It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
- It reads as a pet form, and people will ask what it is short for.
- There is no recoverable parent and therefore no meaning to give.
- It is very firmly of the late nineteenth century.
