Our story of Zella
Our story of Zella begins in a decade that liked the -ella ending and had a sudden appetite for the letter z. Rosella, Estella, Luella and Zella all appear in the same American registers of the 1880s, and the z gave a familiar shape something nobody else had. It went down on certificates across the Midwest and South, peaked around 1900, and left no note about which of its possible parents anyone had in mind.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No settled origin. It is read as a shortening of Zelda, itself from the German Griselda; as a form of Rosella or Marcella with the front removed; and as a coinage on the -ella ending. A separate German Zella is a place name. None is documented as the source.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
