Zephan
Masculine · “he has hidden or protected”
Cutting the end off Zephaniah removes God from it. The -iah is not decoration: it is the divine name, shortened, and it is the whole second half of the sentence the name makes. Zephan keeps the verb and drops the subject.

The story of Zephan
Zephaniah is one of the twelve minor prophets, active in Judah under Josiah in the seventh century before the common era, and his short book is the source of the Dies Irae. His name belongs to a very large class of Hebrew names built as sentences about God: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Obadiah, Nehemiah, Elijah, Michael, Daniel. American naming has recently taken to shortening these, giving Zeph, Zephan, Neri and Isai, which is a natural English move and a theologically odd one, since it silently removes the element the name was built around. Zephan's best year in United States records is 2011.
Meaning
he has hidden or protected
Hebrew Tzephanyah combines a verb meaning to hide, treasure up or protect with yah, the shortened form of the divine name, giving the Lord has hidden or the Lord has protected. Names ending in -iah, -jah and -el are theophoric: the ending is a name of God and carries the grammatical subject. Removing it leaves a verb with nothing to perform it.

The Brinson test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Zephan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Brinson climbed just as high around 1955, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Brinson's path sketches the road Zephan is walking now.
Zephan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Hebrew meaning and a documented prophet behind it.
- Zeph is short, current and independently used.
- The Z opening makes it stand out immediately.
- The shortening removes the divine element the name was built around.
- Zephaniah is the biblical form and will be assumed by anyone who knows it.
- It is close to Zephyr and Stephan and gets confused with both.
