Where it comes from

The story of Zakery

The prophet who carries the name supplied an image that outlived everything else he wrote. In a passage about a king coming to his city he specifies the transport: not a warhorse but a donkey, and a young one at that, which in that context is a deliberate refusal of the usual iconography of a victorious ruler. The line was quoted afterwards in the accounts of one particular entry into Jerusalem, and the donkey has been in the story ever since, on windows, in paintings, in processions and in the palms handed out once a year. The rest of the book is difficult, visionary and rarely read; that one animal is known to people who could not name the prophet.

Meaning

the Lord has remembered

Two Hebrew elements, a verb about remembering and a shortened form of the divine name, and the reading is settled. It is a complete statement rather than a description, which is how a great many Hebrew names are built. Neither the k nor the respelled ending affects the meaning.

How the name formed

  1. A Hebrew sentence about remembering
  2. Carried by some thirty men in the biblical record
  3. Transliterated through Greek with a ch
  4. Zakery writing the sound without it

Three syllables, stress on the first, with the middle reduced almost to nothing. That reduction is why the middle vowel appears as an a, an e and an i across the several spellings, all of them sounding identical.

Zakery sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1993, with 77 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Zakery sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is a complete sentence and easy to explain to a child.
  • Zak is immediate, current and understood everywhere.
  • The spelling writes the sound without any Greek machinery.
What to consider
  • Zachary is the standard spelling and this will be corrected into it constantly.
  • Four or five spellings are in circulation and none is rare.
  • The z at the front makes the name unmistakable and slightly conspicuous.
