Fatima, the Prophet's daughter, is called al-Zahra, the radiant. It is an epithet rather than a name, and in Shia tradition it is used more often than the name itself: the mosque in Cairo, al-Azhar, is named for her. Zahria belongs to that word, which means both radiant and a flower in blossom.

How old is the name Zahria?

Zahria first appears in US birth records in 1995 — 30 years ago. The typical Zahria alive today was born around 2006, making them about 19 years old. About 1,000 people named Zahria are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Zahria most popular?

Zahria peaked in 1998, reaching #2429 nationally. Today it ranks #8362, 5,933 places below that high. See the whole 1998 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Zahria

Epithets do a great deal of work in Islamic naming and several of them are used more than the names they attach to. Fatima is al-Zahra, the radiant, and also al-Batul, the pure. Ali is al-Murtada, the chosen. Abu Bakr is al-Siddiq, the truthful. Khalid ibn al-Walid is Sayf Allah, the sword of God. The epithets became names in their own right, so that Zahra, Batul, Murtada and Siddiq are all given to children, and the al-Azhar mosque and university in Cairo, founded in 970, carries Fatima's epithet in its name. The root behind it is entirely ordinary Arabic: zahr is what a plant does in spring, and the connection between flowering and radiance is one the language makes explicitly.

Meaning

Arabic zahra, blossom or radiance

From the Arabic root z-h-r, associated with brightness and with flowering, giving zahr, blossom, and zahra, a flower or a radiant woman. Al-Zahra is the standard epithet of Fatima, daughter of Muhammad. Zahria is an American respelling adding an i; the standard forms are Zahra, Zahara and Zohra. It peaks in 1998.

Zahria sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2002, with 58 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, positive and doubly apt.
  • Zahra is available as a shorter standard form.
  • It is used across the Arab world, Iran and Turkey.
What to consider
  • Zahra is the standard spelling and much more common.
  • The h between the vowels is often dropped in English.
  • Zaria and Zahria are easily confused.
