Yzabella
Feminine · “Hebrew "my God is an oath”
For centuries Isabel and Elizabeth were the same name. Medieval English records use them interchangeably for the same woman, because Isabel began as a Provençal reduction of Elizabeth — the front cut off and the ending softened — and only later hardened into a separate name.

The story of Yzabella
The two names traveled together for a long time. English legal and church records of the twelfth to fifteenth centuries name the same woman Isabella in one entry and Elizabeth in another, and the medieval Latin forms Elisabetha and Isabella were treated as equivalents. Isabel became the standard form in Spain, Portugal and southern France, and Elizabeth in the north; England had both. The separation was complete by the seventeenth century, and English speakers now hear them as unrelated. Isabella returned to heavy American use in the 2000s; the respelling Yzabella peaks in 2010.
Meaning
Hebrew "my God is an oath"
From Elisheva through Latin Elisabeth. Occitan and Spanish speakers dropped the initial syllable and reshaped the ending, giving Isabel; the final -bel was later felt as French belle, beautiful, which is a folk etymology. Isabella is the Latinate and Italian form. Yzabella substitutes y for i and carries no separate meaning. There is no connection to the Phoenician Jezebel, despite the similarity.
