Spanish friars writing Mesoamerican languages in the sixteenth century had to invent spellings for sounds Spanish did not have, and tz was one of their solutions: a single affricate, the ts of cats, which Nahuatl uses constantly. It appears in Tzintzuntzan, the Purépecha capital whose name means place of hummingbirds; in Itzcoatl, an Aztec ruler; in Quetzalcoatl. Modern Mexican naming has adopted the digraph as a marker, and it now appears in a large group of names — Yuritzi, Yaretzi, Itzel, Xitlali — some of which have documented indigenous sources and many of which do not. The spelling is real history; the meanings attached to the newer names usually are not, and separating the two is the only honest way to handle them. Yuritzi peaks in 2017.
