The story of Ysabel
Isabel became the Spanish and Portuguese form of Elizabeth in the Middle Ages and separated from it entirely, so that a country could have both. Isabel I of Castile — Isabella, who funded Columbus and completed the Reconquista — is its most consequential bearer, and she signed herself Ysabel; the y spelling was standard until Spanish orthography was regularised. Its appearance in American records around 1898 is a small revival rather than a survival, part of the late Victorian taste for archaic spellings, and the name has been rare since.
Meaning
My God is an oath
Isabel descends from Elizabeth, Hebrew ʾĔlîšebaʿ — ʾēl, God, and a second element read as oath or abundance. Provençal and Old Spanish speakers dropped the initial vowel and reshaped the ending, producing Elisabel and then Isabel. The reading is settled. Ysabel is the medieval Spanish orthography, where y and i were interchangeable.
