Yasin
Masculine · Arabic roots
Yasin is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 2,784 boys against 5 girls since 1880.
Yasin is the title of the thirty-sixth chapter of the Quran, a chapter that opens with nothing but two Arabic letters — yā and sīn — spoken aloud and left unexplained. As a name it is two clean syllables that land on the long ee, and it travels from Morocco to Indonesia with barely a change of shape.

The story of Yasin
The name comes from Surah Yā Sīn, revealed in the seventh century and among the most frequently recited chapters of the Quran; in many Muslim communities it is read at bedsides and at funerals, which is part of why the two letters became so familiar. From there Yasin spread as a personal name wherever the Quran was read — Arabic-speaking North Africa and the Levant, Turkey, the Balkans, West Africa, Pakistan, Indonesia and Malaysia. Each language kept the sound and adjusted the spelling: Yaseen in English transliteration from Arabic and Urdu, Yassine across the French-speaking Maghreb, Yasin in Turkish and Bosnian. It reaches American records through all of those routes at once, which is why it is a genuinely international name rather than a borrowed one.

What is documented is the source, not a translation. Yā Sīn is one of the Quran's muqatta'at — sets of disconnected letters that begin certain chapters — and classical commentators proposed various readings, including that the letters address the Prophet Muhammad directly. No single interpretation is settled, and Muslim scholarship has generally been comfortable leaving it that way.

The Kollin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yasin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kollin climbed just as high around 1996, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kollin's path sketches the road Yasin is walking now.
Yasin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, phonetic in English, and spelled the way it sounds once heard — most people get it right on the second try.
- Works unchanged across Arabic, Turkish, Bosnian, Malay and Indonesian, so relatives in different countries can all say it.
- Tied to a text read continuously since the seventh century, which gives it a record far older than its appearance in American statistics.
- Established alternate spellings — Yaseen, Yassine — mean the name is already familiar to registrars and teachers in several forms.
- The competing transliterations are the main friction: Yasin, Yaseen, Yassin and Yassine all exist side by side, so he will sometimes receive mail in a spelling that isn't his.
- In the US it can be misheard as Yasmin or Jasmine, which are read as girls' names. Saying the ending clearly usually settles it.
- The Quranic tie is a real part of the name and is deeply valued in Muslim families; outside that context it will occasionally invite a question, which is easy to answer and worth knowing in advance.
