Mattias
Masculine · “Gift of God”
Mattias is the Swedish and Norwegian shape of a name that has been passed hand to hand for well over two thousand years, from Hebrew into Greek and out across Europe. It keeps three unhurried syllables and a soft landing — ma-TEE-as — where the English Matthew keeps only two. Familiar at first glance, and still uncommon enough that most classrooms hold just one.

The story of Mattias
The root is the Hebrew name Mattityahu, which Greek-speaking Jews shortened to Matthias, and it is under that Greek form that it appears in the Acts of the Apostles, where Matthias is chosen by lot to complete the Twelve. Latin carried Matthias into medieval Europe, where nearly every language filed down its own version: German Matthias, Spanish Matías, Hungarian Mátyás. Swedish and Norwegian settled on the single-h spelling, Mattias and Mathias, and kept it in steady use through the modern era. The double-t Mattias is the form that traveled to the United States with Scandinavian families and, more recently, arrived again through Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking households who know it as Matías or Matias.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Javan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mattias's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Javan climbed just as high around 2004, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off
- Understood on sight across Swedish, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Hungarian, each with its own local spelling of the same name.
- Comes with short forms already in use — Matt, Matty, Mats — so nothing has to be invented.
- An unbroken written record from Hebrew through Greek and Latin into the modern European languages.
- Distinct in a classroom while still being a name adults recognize immediately.
- Matthias, Mathias, Matias and Matías are all live spellings of the same name, so this one will be repeated and corrected fairly often — usually a five-second matter, but a lifelong one.
- Two pronunciations circulate in English, ma-TEE-as and muh-TY-us. Worth deciding which you want before the first roll call, since teachers will guess otherwise.
- In everyday use it may well be shortened to Matt, which puts him among the Matthews. If the full three syllables are the point, plan on using them yourself.
