Where it comes from

The story of Kollin

Medieval England made pet names by clipping and adding -in, so Nicholas gave Col and Col gave Colin. Quite separately, Scottish Gaelic Cailean was written as Colin when Highland names were put into English, and the two became one spelling with two ancestries. Colin was steady in twentieth-century America; the Kollin and Kollen respellings arrived in the last few decades, part of a broad move to swap a hard C for a K.

little Nicholas, or young pup

Two lines feed the name. English Colin is a medieval pet form of Col, itself short for Nicholas, meaning victory of the people. Scottish Gaelic Cailean, anglicized as Colin, is built on a word for a whelp or young dog, and was a name of the Campbell chiefs.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kollin went to 38 boys in 2025, but Colin, Collin and Kolin and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 1,628, which makes it the 225th most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,903 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 1,049 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 44,949 for Kollin itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is completely familiar, so only the spelling is ever in question.
  • Two real documented ancestries sit behind it, English and Gaelic.
  • Short, easy on a form, and it has aged well across several generations.
What to consider
  • Colin is the standard spelling and will be written on almost everything unless corrected.
  • Kollin, Kolin, Collin and Colin are four live spellings of one name, and he will recite his.
