Yashira
Feminine · “she will sing”
Yashira is a Hebrew verb in the future tense: she will sing. Modern Hebrew naming has built a great many names this way — taking an ordinary word and letting it stand as a name without any ceremony — and this one belongs to that project rather than to the biblical stock. It has also, unexpectedly, taken hold in Puerto Rico.

The story of Yashira
Modern Hebrew naming, from the late nineteenth century onward, deliberately built new names out of ordinary vocabulary — light, song, dew, dawn — as part of the wider project of making the language live again. Shira and Yashira both belong to it. What is genuinely surprising is where this spelling ended up: American records show it concentrated among Puerto Rican families from the 1980s, arriving through a Spanish-language route rather than a Hebrew one, and the two populations have almost nothing to do with each other.
Meaning
she will sing
From the Hebrew root sh-r, to sing, in a future-tense form. The same root gives shir, a song, and Shira, which is the plainer name built on it. Naming a daughter with a whole conjugated verb is a modern Hebrew habit rather than an ancient one, and it produces names that are sentences in miniature.

The Cammi test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yashira's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cammi climbed just as high around 1968, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cammi's path sketches the road Yashira is walking now.
Yashira sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a complete sentence in three words, which very few names manage.
- Shira is available as a short form and is a standing name of its own.
- Three open syllables that survive any accent intact.
- It is spelled phonetically for English readers.
- Yashira, Yasira and Jashira all appear in records, so the spelling has to be given.
- The stress falls differently in Hebrew than in American use.
- The two communities using it have entirely separate reasons, which makes the meaning worth confirming rather than assuming.
