The Greeks called camomile the earth-apple — chamai, on the ground, and melon, an apple — because the flowers smell of apples when crushed and the plant grows flat. Spanish arrived at the same idea independently and calls it manzanilla, little apple, which is also the name of a dry sherry and of an olive, both named for looking like small apples. The plant was used as a strewing herb, walked on deliberately because it releases the scent when trodden, and lawns of it were fashionable in Tudor England and are being planted again. Two kinds are sold: the German annual, which is what is in most tea, and the Roman perennial, which is the one used for lawns. Neither is Roman or German in origin.
