Yannick
Masculine · “God is gracious”

The story of Yannick
Breton is a Celtic language, brought from Britain in the fifth and sixth centuries by the same migration that named Brittany, and it has its own stock of names: Yann, Gwenael, Erwan, Soizic. Yannick spread out of Brittany into general French use in the twentieth century and became widely given in France, Belgium, Quebec and francophone Africa. It came to American records from all of those directions, and it is used for women in France too, though far less often.
Meaning
God is gracious
Through Breton Yann from Latin Iohannes and Greek Ioannes, and behind them Hebrew Yochanan: Yah, the divine name, with chanan, to show favor. The -ick ending is a Breton diminutive and adds affection rather than meaning.

The Dewie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yannick's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dewie climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dewie's path sketches the road Yannick is walking now.
Yannick sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- English readers may say the Y as a J, which is not the sound.
- Yannick, Yannic and Yanick all appear, so the spelling will be asked for.
- The stress at the end is regularly flattened in American speech.
