Xóchitl is the Nahuatl for a flower, and it is also a day. The Aztec ritual calendar ran on twenty day-signs and Xochitl was the twentieth — a good day, associated with art and skill. The name survives in Mexico in real numbers, and Xochilt is the spelling that swaps the last two letters, because the sound they make together is one English has never had.

Where it comes from

The story of Xochilt

Nahuatl was the language of the Aztec empire and is still spoken by well over a million people in Mexico. Its tl is a single sound — a lateral consonant English has no equivalent for — and Spanish speakers approximate it, while English speakers generally cannot manage it at all. That difficulty is why the spelling metathesizes: writing Xochilt puts the l before the t and produces something a Spanish speaker can say more easily. The x, meanwhile, is a sh sound, which is the other thing every non-speaker gets wrong.

Meaning

flower

From the Nahuatl xochitl, a flower, and the name of the twentieth day-sign of the two-hundred-and-sixty-day ritual calendar. The word appears inside a great many Nahuatl place names and compounds, and it is one of the words that passed into Mexican Spanish and stayed.

Pronouncing Xochilt

SOH-cheel

Two syllables. The x is a sh sound in Nahuatl, softened to an s in Mexican Spanish. The original ending is a single consonant that English cannot produce; this spelling reverses the letters to make something sayable, and the result is closer to -cheel than to anything English readers expect.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is one word, entirely positive, and it names a day in a real calendar.
  • It is a genuine indigenous Mexican name with an unbroken history.
  • Xochi works as a short form and is standard in Mexico.
  • It is unmistakable — a child will almost certainly never meet another in America.
What to consider
  • Nobody outside Mexican communities reads it correctly on sight, and the correction is required in every new room.
  • Xóchitl is the standard spelling and carries an accent that American forms will drop.
  • The final consonant cluster genuinely cannot be produced by most English speakers.
