Where it comes from

Our story of Monya

Money is named after a goddess's nickname. Rome minted its coins in or beside the temple of Juno Moneta on the Capitoline, and the mint took the temple's name: moneta became the word for a mint and then for the coin itself, giving Italian moneta, French monnaie and English money and mint alike. Moneta itself is usually derived from monere, to warn or advise — the geese of that temple being the ones that warned the city of an attack, in a story the Romans told about themselves. So the same Latin verb gives money, monitor, admonish, monument and premonition. A word about being warned produced the entire vocabulary of currency, which is either a coincidence or a very old joke.

Russian and Polish produce familiar forms of this shape from several longer names, and American naming produced builds of exactly the same shape in the same decades. Nothing separates them and the record holds the short form alone.

Monya sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1970, with 27 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Monya sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it simple to write and spell aloud.
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape there is.
  • It is rare while being built entirely from familiar sounds.
What to consider
  • Monia, Sonya and Tonya will all be written for it.
  • The syllable count is unstable, so the name gets said two ways.
  • Nothing records its origin, so the meaning question has two answers.
