The story of Xion
Mount Zion named the Jebusite stronghold David took, then the temple mount, then Jerusalem, then the whole people — an expanding sequence unusual for a place name. Zion rose in American naming from the 1990s and the X respelling followed. Xion appears in the registers in the 2000s and is in current use.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- A place of enormous religious and historical weight stands behind it.
- The expansion from a hill to a whole people is a genuinely striking piece of history.
- Two clean syllables once the X is explained.
- The hill's own meaning is genuinely unrecovered.
- The X will be misread as ex by people meeting it on paper.
- Zion is the standard spelling and will be assumed.
