Xaviar
Masculine · “the new house”
Xavier is not a name. It is a house — a castle in Navarre, in Basque country, whose name means the new house — and it became a name because one man born there took it as his own and went to Asia. Everything since has been spelling: this version swaps the last two letters, giving -iar where the standard gives -ier.

The story of Xaviar
Francis of Xavier joined Ignatius of Loyola in founding the Jesuits and then spent the rest of his life traveling — India, the Malay archipelago, Japan — dying on an island off the Chinese coast. His missions made his name enormously well known in Catholic Europe and then in Asia and Latin America, and it became a given name in his honor. The -iar spelling is American and recent: it is the ordinary result of a name being written by people who have heard it far more often than they have read it, and who reach for the ending that English uses more often.
Meaning
the new house
From the Basque etxeberria, from etxe, a house, and berri, new. The castle of Xavier in Navarre carries the name, and Francis Xavier was born there and used the place as his surname, which is how a Basque farmhouse word became a Christian given name across four continents.

Pronouncing Xaviar
ZAY-vee-er
Three syllables, stress on the first, in American English — the x said as a z. Basque and Catalan say the x as a sh, giving sha-bee-AIR; Spanish writes it Javier and says the j as a throat sound. The three versions barely resemble each other.

The Alcides test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Xaviar's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Alcides climbed just as high around 1966, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Alcides's path sketches the road Xaviar is walking now.
Xaviar sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The name has a documented origin in a specific building, which almost no name can claim.
- Xavi, Javi and X are all available and belong to different languages and registers.
- It is recognized across Catholic Europe, Latin America and much of Asia.
- The x at the front is genuinely distinctive in English without being unreadable.
- Xavier is the standard spelling and will be written instead on nearly every document.
- The x is said three different ways in the three languages that use the name, so international relatives will not agree.
- The difference between -iar and -ier is silent, which means dictating the spelling forever.
