The story of Wynton
Wynton Kelly, a Jamaican-born pianist, played on some of the great jazz records, including a track on Miles Davis's Kind of Blue, and the New Orleans pianist Ellis Marsalis admired him enough to name a son after him. That son, Wynton Marsalis, became the first musician to win Grammy awards for jazz and for classical music in the same year, and went on to lead jazz at Lincoln Center. The name came from an English surname, and jazz gave it its American life.
