Wyman is an Old English name that survived only by becoming a surname. Its second half was once mund, a word for protection or a protecting hand, and English wore it down to man — which makes the name look like a compound of ordinary words and it is not.

How old is the name Wyman?

Wyman first appears in US birth records in 1898 — 127 years ago. The typical Wyman alive today was born around 1950, making them about 75 years old. About 1,500 people named Wyman are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Wyman most popular?

Wyman peaked in 1911, reaching #689 nationally. See the whole 1911 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Wyman

The Germanic element mund meant a hand and then, by extension, the protection a hand gives, and it closed a long list of names: Edmund, Osmund, Sigmund, Raymond, Wigmund. In English it was steadily reshaped toward the familiar word man, which is why several English surnames that look transparent are nothing of the sort — a Wyman is not a man of any kind. The personal name went out of use after the Conquest and lived on as a family name, and American families in the nineteenth century moved it back to the front, where it had been a thousand years earlier without their knowing it.

Meaningscholars disagree

battle protector

The likeliest source is the Old English Wigmund, joining a word for battle to one for protection. A second possibility is a nickname for a man who lived by a road. The surname is old enough that both are plausible.

Wyman sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1923, with 53 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Wyman sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both syllables are readable, so the name is said correctly at sight.
  • It works as a surname and as a first name, which suits families that use both.
  • It has a documented English history reaching back before the Conquest.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Wayman and written that way.
  • The name looks like two ordinary words and is not, which invites the wrong explanation.
  • It reads as a name of the turn of the twentieth century.
