The story of Williard
Frances Willard is the reason the surname was in American mouths at all in the decades this spelling appears. She ran the Woman's Christian Temperance Union for nearly twenty years and turned it into the largest organization of women in the country by attaching almost everything else to it — the vote above all, but also prison reform, the eight-hour day and kindergartens. Her argument was that a woman who could not vote could not protect her own household, and it moved a great many conservative women into suffrage who would never have got there any other way. She was the first woman honored with a statue in the United States Capitol.
Meaning
bold in will
Willard is a Germanic compound of the ordinary kind: a word meaning will or desire and one meaning hard, brave or bold. William is a different compound entirely, built on will and helmet. They share a first element and nothing else, and the resemblance is a coincidence of two common Germanic words being available to the same name-makers. Williard writes the second i that belongs to William into the middle of the other name, which is why it looks familiar and reads as a mistake.
How the name formed
- a Germanic compound meaning bold in will
- Willard established as an English surname
- an American reformer makes the name widely known

Fashion outlook
Williard sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is completely established and needs no explanation to anyone.
- Will is available immediately and works at every age.
- It suits a child of either sex, and the record carries it on both sides.
- Every document will correct it to Willard or to William, and both will happen.
- It reads as an error to most people who meet it, whatever the family intended.
- The name is out of use in both its spellings and reads as a great-grandfather's.
