Masculine · “will”
Willaim carries two letters in the wrong order, and behind it is the name that took over England faster than any name has taken over any country. Before the conquest it was essentially unknown in English use. Within a century it was the commonest man's name in the country, and it stayed at or near the top for the next six hundred years.

The story of Willaim
The man who brought it was not called the Conqueror in his lifetime. His contemporaries called him William the Bastard, which was a statement of legal fact about his parents rather than an insult, and the grander title was applied by later writers who needed a way to describe what he had done without reminding everybody how he had started. Within two generations of his arrival the English aristocracy had been almost entirely replaced, and English families were naming sons after the new landholders, which is how a Norman name became the ordinary English one. The scale of the shift is hard to overstate: a name that appears in almost no pre-conquest English records is, by the middle of the twelfth century, carried by something like a fifth of the men in some surveys.
Meaning
will, helmet
Two Germanic elements: one meaning will or desire, the other a helmet or protection. The combination is old and well attested and the reading is not in question. Names built this way were assembled from a family's stock of elements rather than composed as statements, so the meaning describes the parts honestly and does not describe anybody's intention for a particular child.
