Wilbert Awdry was a clergyman in England when, during the Second World War, his small son Christopher was in bed with measles and wanted stories. Awdry told him about railway engines with faces, and in 1945 the first of the Railway Series books appeared; Thomas the Tank Engine arrived in the second, in 1946, and later reached television screens around the world. Wilberto belongs with the English-looking names that Spanish-speaking families fitted with Spanish endings, and no record names the family that first wrote it.
