Where it comes from

The story of Wilbern

Wilburh was an Anglo-Saxon woman's name, and it survived as a place-name and then as the surname Wilbur, which Americans made a boy's first name. Alongside it stood Wilburn and Wilbern. The ending -bern recalls Old English beorn, a poetic word for a warrior that is the same word as Old Norse björn, bear, and Tolkien built his bear-man Beorn in The Hobbit on exactly that double meaning. A family choosing Wilbern need not have known any of it, but the letters carry it.

Meaningscholars disagree

will and fortress, through Wilbur, or will and warrior

Wilbur comes from the Old English woman's name Wilburh, joining wil, will or desire, and burh, fortress. Wilbern may be a spelling of Wilburn, or may carry beorn, warrior, in its second half; the record does not say which.

Fashion outlook

Wilbern sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It sounds like an established American name with a long English history.
  • Will is a ready, familiar short form.
  • It is almost never given now, so it is distinctive.
What to consider
  • It will be written Wilburn or Wilbur by nearly everyone.
  • It sounds old-fashioned to many ears, which some families like and some do not.
