The story of Wendolyn
Welsh has a sound English does not, and it shows up in the spelling. Where Latin had a v, Welsh developed gw — vinum became gwin, and a whole set of Welsh names begin that way: Gwen, Gwilym, Gwyneth, Gwendolen. English borrowers have never known what to do with it, and have variously kept it, turned it into a hard g, or dropped it entirely, which is how Gwilym gives William and Gwendolen gives Wendolyn. The second road to the same spelling runs through Barrie's invented Wendy, which was a genuine novelty in 1904 and everywhere by the 1950s, and which took the -lyn ending as easily as everything else did.

If the name is Gwendolen with the g dropped, the elements are Welsh gwen, white or blessed, and dolen, a ring or a bow, and the compound has never been satisfactorily explained. If it is Wendy plus the -lyn ending, there is no meaning at all: Wendy was invented and -lyn is a free-floating suffix.
