The story of Viviann
Vivianus was a Roman name that became a Christian one through a bishop of Saintes; Bibiana was a Roman martyr of the same word. English took Vivian for both sexes and it was a men's name for centuries before it became a women's one — Arthurian romance gave Vivien to the enchantress who traps Merlin, which shifted it. Viviann with a doubled n is a modern American respelling.
Meaning
alive, living
From Latin vivus, alive; Vivianus and Bibiana are the derived names, and the b and v were interchangeable in later Latin, which is why Spanish gives Bibiana for the same name.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Shanah test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Viviann's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shanah climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shanah's path sketches the road Viviann is walking now.
Viviann sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
