The story of Viridiana
Verdiana or Viridiana of Castelfiorentino died in 1242 after decades as an anchoress, and her cult was local and Tuscan. The name would have stayed local if Luis Buñuel had not used it in 1961 for a novice who leaves the convent and finds her charity comprehensively abused; the film won the Palme d'Or, was denounced by the Vatican, and was banned in Franco's Spain. It became well known across the Spanish-speaking world, and Viridiana entered Mexican naming in a way it had not before. American records show it with Mexican-American families and a peak in 1995.
Meaning
Green, verdant
From Latin viridis, green or fresh, the root of English verdant and viridian. The reading is settled. Saint Viridiana was a thirteenth-century Tuscan anchoress who lived walled into a cell beside a church at Castelfiorentino for thirty-four years; her name is the source of the Christian use.

The trade-off
- The meaning is settled, concrete and pleasant.
- Viri is a warm and established Mexican short form.
- It has both a saint and a famous film behind it.
- Five syllables is long for American paperwork and will be truncated.
- The film's story is about charity being abused, which is a specific association.
- It is unfamiliar outside Mexican-American communities.
