The story of Viktoria
Victoria was a Roman goddess with temples and coinage, and she survived the end of paganism as a woman's name carried by early Christian martyrs. The name stayed quiet in most of Europe until a nineteenth-century British queen made it enormous, after which it spread to every country in contact with the empire. German, Russian and the Nordic languages had it already and wrote it with a k; those forms reach United States records with families from central and eastern Europe, and Viktoria is a reliable marker of that origin rather than of the English name.
Meaning
victory
Latin victoria, from vincere, 'to conquer'. Victoria was also a Roman goddess, the personification of victory and the counterpart of the Greek Nike. The reading is exact and undisputed. The k is a spelling convention in German, Russian, Hungarian, Polish, Czech and the Nordic languages, all of which prefer it to the Latin c.
