The Vincent this name comes from turned charity into an organization with accounts and staff. Before him, relief of the poor in France was individual and haphazard; he built structures for it, trained people, kept records, and made the whole thing continue after the founder had died, which is the part almost nobody manages.

Where it comes from

The story of Vicenta

The society that carries his name was founded by students two hundred years after he died. A group of undergraduates in Paris, challenged in a debate about whether the church had ever done anything useful, decided to answer by visiting the poor themselves, took him as their patron and organized into small local groups that met weekly and reported to each other. It spread to a hundred and fifty countries and is still going. A twenty-year-old losing an argument produced one of the largest volunteer organizations in the world, which is a better outcome than most debates manage.

Meaning

Conquering

Latin vincens, the present participle of the verb to conquer, so the name means conquering rather than conqueror. It is a participle used as a name, which Latin did readily and English does not. The Spanish feminine is formed from the masculine by changing the final vowel.

Fashion outlook

Vicenta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a standard Spanish name rather than an American construction.
  • The meaning is transparent and grammatically interesting.
  • Three short forms in two languages, all quite unlike each other.
What to consider
  • English speakers will read the c as a k or say the name as Vincenta.
  • It is dated in Spanish-speaking communities and reads as a grandmother's name there.
  • The participle meaning is hard to render in English without sounding odd.
