Vernette is a Latin front with a French ending and no French name anywhere in between. That combination is characteristic of American naming in the first half of the last century: take a familiar root, attach a suffix that signals elegance, and produce a name that looks European and exists nowhere in Europe.

Where it comes from

The story of Vernette

The ending has a documented moment of political life. In the early years of the twentieth century a London newspaper, wanting to distinguish the women smashing windows from the respectable campaigners who had been petitioning for decades, coined suffragette as a diminutive: a small, silly, lesser sort of suffragist. The women it was aimed at took the word immediately, put it on their own paper and their own banners, and used it as a badge for the rest of the campaign, which is one of the cleanest examples in English of an insult being captured by its target. The same ending, in the same decades, was being attached to American girls' names to make them sound French. It is the same suffix doing entirely different work in two countries at once.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The front is shared with Verna and Vernon, which have separate and disputed origins; the ending is the French diminutive, meaning small or dear. Since the front cannot be pinned down and the ending contributes only a register, the compound has no meaning that can be stated honestly. What it has is a shape, and the shape can be dated.

Two syllables with the stress at the back, which is where the French ending puts it and where English would not. The final e is silent, as it is in every English word that borrowed this ending.

Vernette sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 30 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Vernette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Final stress gives the name a definite finish and makes it carry when called.
  • Verna and Nettie are two complete names sitting inside it, in different registers.
  • The sounds are all ordinary English and the name is never mispronounced twice.
What to consider
  • The ending places the name precisely in the early twentieth century in American ears.
  • It will be heard as Bernadette and as Yvette, both of which are commoner.
  • There is no meaning available for the whole name, only a shape and a date.
