Where it comes from

The story of Verne

Jules Verne was translated into English almost immediately and almost entirely badly. Early translators cut the science, cut the politics, shortened the books by a third, mangled the measurements, and in at least one case reversed a character's nationality. Generations of English readers therefore met him as a writer of thin boys' adventures, while French readers had a careful and often pointed novelist — and the gap took until the last few decades to close, with new translations restoring what had been thrown away. It is the clearest case in modern literature of a reputation made by the quality of its translations rather than by the work.

Meaning

Alder tree

The French surname comes from a regional word for an alder, the tree that grows in wet ground and does not rot under water. Families were named for a notable tree or for living beside a stand of them, which is one of the commonest sources of European surnames.

Verne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1922, with 158 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Verne has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, firm and completely unambiguous.
  • The meaning is concrete and pleasant.
  • It has a famous bearer who is genuinely worth reading.
What to consider
  • Vern without the e is the commoner American spelling and his will be written that way.
  • Most children with this spelling are boys, but a real minority are girls; either may be taken for the other.
  • The name belongs strongly to an older American generation.
