Where it comes from

Our story of Verdia

A verdict has nothing to do with green. It comes from the Anglo-French verdit, from the Latin phrase vere dictum — truly said — so a jury's verdict is literally a true saying, and the word sits alongside verify, veritable and verisimilitude on the truth root. Verdure, verdant and verdigris come from a completely different Latin word, viridis, meaning green. The two families have no connection whatever, and English speakers who notice the shared letters are seeing an accident of French spelling. It is a useful pair to keep in mind about names as well: two words that begin alike are not related unless somebody has traced them, and the first four letters of anything are the least reliable evidence there is.

Not established

It may be built on the Romance word for green, which gives verdant and verdure; it may extend a shorter name; or it may be one of the independent builds the decade produced in quantity. Nothing documents any of them.

Verdia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 23 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Verdia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Six letters with no silent ones make it quick to write and simple to spell aloud.
  • It is genuinely rare and belongs to almost nobody now living.
  • Both cuts produce usable short forms.
What to consider
  • Verda, Verdie and Verna will all be written for it.
  • Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
  • Nothing records its origin, so the meaning question has no honest answer.
