The story of Venus
Venus was the Roman goddess of love and the mother of Aeneas, and so an ancestor of Rome itself; Julius Caesar's family claimed descent from her. The planet is named for her because it is the brightest. The name entered American given-name use in the twentieth century and is in current use.
Meaning
love, desire, charm
From the Latin venus, 'love' or 'charm', a common noun before it named the goddess. The root gives venerari, 'to worship', venenum, 'a love-potion' and then poison, and the Germanic wunsch and English 'win' and 'wish'. The etymology is documented.

Venus sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
