Venessa
Feminine
Vanessa was made out of a woman's two names. Jonathan Swift built it for Esther Vanhomrigh — Van from her surname, Essa from Esther — and used it in a poem about their friendship. It is one of the few English names whose author, decade and method are all documented, and the e in this spelling pulls it toward Venus instead.

The story of Venessa
Swift met Esther Vanhomrigh in London, taught her, corresponded with her for years, and wrote Cadenus and Vanessa about the relationship — Cadenus being an anagram of decanus, dean, which was his own title. The poem was published after her death and the name escaped into the world. It stayed rare for two centuries and then became very widely used in the twentieth. The Venessa spelling belongs to that later period and reflects a name learned by ear, where an unstressed a and e sound identical.

The name was assembled from parts of two other names and therefore has no meaning of its own — that is not a gap in the record but the whole account. Swift took the first syllable of Vanhomrigh and a pet form of Esther and joined them. A naturalist later used Vanessa for a genus of butterflies, which is why the red admiral carries it, and the e spelling moves the word toward Venus without connecting it to her.

vuh-NESS-uh, three syllables, stress in the middle, the first vowel reduced to almost nothing. Vanessa is said identically — the first syllable is unstressed and an a and an e are the same sound there, which is the whole reason this spelling exists.

Fashion outlook
Venessa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The origin is documented down to the author and the relationship, which very few names manage.
- Nessa is a ready short form and a complete name in its own right.
- The butterfly genus gives it a second and quite separate association worth knowing.
- Vanessa is the standard spelling and this will be corrected toward it on essentially every document.
- Because the difference is inaudible, defending the e is a purely visual argument.
- The e suggests a connection to Venus that the name's actual history does not support.
