Where it comes from

The story of Venancio

Venantius Fortunatus was born near Treviso in northern Italy, crossed into Gaul, and settled at Poitiers near the convent of Queen Radegund. When a relic of the Cross arrived there, he wrote two hymns for it, Vexilla Regis prodeunt and Pange lingua gloriosi proelium certaminis, and both have stayed in the Western liturgy ever since; he ended his life as bishop of Poitiers. In Spanish the name became Venancio, and in the nineteenth century it belonged to Venancio Flores, the Uruguayan general and president who was assassinated in Montevideo in 1868, on the same day his rival Bernardo Berro was killed.

Fashion outlook

Venancio sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Latin meaning, hunter, and a poet whose hymns are still sung.
  • Used in Spanish, Portuguese and Italian forms.
  • Four syllables with a steady stress on the second.
What to consider
  • Rare in the United States; expect to spell it and to explain the pronunciation.
  • In Uruguay the name recalls a president killed in office; it is a history-book association rather than a current one.
