Where it comes from
From Valentinus to Val
The story of Val
That Latin verb produced an English word with two pronunciations and one meaning. An invalid is somebody not strong — the noun, said with the stress at the front — and an invalid argument is one that does not hold, said with the stress in the middle; they are the same word, from the same negative of the same verb, and English separated them by moving the accent rather than by changing anything else. The pair is one of a small set where the language has kept a single spelling for two jobs and marked the difference with stress alone.
Meaning
strong, healthy
The Latin verb behind most of the possible parents means to be strong or to be well. One candidate is Germanic instead and means rule, so even the language is not fixed.

The Santos test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Val's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Santos climbed just as high around 1906, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Santos's path sketches the road Val is walking now.
Val sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
