Tyronne
Masculine · “Land of Eogan”
Tyronne doubles an n and then keeps the silent e, which makes both of them redundant. The doubling would shorten the vowel before it and the e would lengthen it; put together they cancel, and the name is said exactly as the one-n, one-e spelling is.

The story of Tyronne
The territory was a real political unit and the earls of it were the last Gaelic lords to hold out against English rule. The war that ended with their defeat and departure closed a system of land tenure, law and patronage that had run for a thousand years; what followed was the plantation of Ulster, the settlement of Scottish and English tenants on the confiscated land, and the demographic arrangement that produced everything since. The name of the territory survives as a county and as a given name in the United States, where it was picked up largely because it sounded well, by families with no connection to any of that and no reason to have one.
