Where it comes from

The story of Tyrell

Walter Tirel was hunting with William II in 1100 when the king was killed by an arrow; Tirel fled to France immediately and never returned, which was read then and since as an admission. The surname reached America and entered given-name use in the twentieth century, rising sharply from the 1970s. It is in current use.

Meaningscholars disagree

stubborn, one who pulls

From the Old French tirel, a byname for a stubborn person, built on tirer, 'to pull' — the image is of an animal that will not be led. A second route derives it from a place name. The tirer reading is the commoner and better documented one.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tyrell went to 78 boys in 2025, but Tyrel and Tirrell are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 103, which makes it the 825th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,134 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 16,583 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 21,898 for Tyrell itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A genuinely notorious moment of English history stands behind it.
  • Ty and Rell are two short forms, both with real records.
  • The end stress gives it a strong rhythm against a front-stressed surname.
What to consider
  • The stubborn reading is not flattering, though it is the documented one.
  • Terrell and Tyrrell are both close and equally established.
  • It is closely dated to the later twentieth century in American records.
