Where it comes from

The story of Tirrell

The death of William II is one of the more suspicious accidents in English history. The king was hunting in the New Forest with a party that included his younger brother Henry; an arrow struck him and he died on the spot; the body was left where it fell and carted to Winchester by a local man. Henry rode immediately to Winchester, seized the treasury, and had himself crowned within three days. Walter Tirel fled to France and, according to a chronicler who spoke to him later, denied to the end of his life that he had even been in that part of the wood. Whether it was an accident has been argued for nine hundred years. The surname survived him and traveled to Ireland and then to America.

About 1 boy in 16,583 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 284,679 for Tirrell itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
