Tryston swaps the ending of a medieval name for one that a whole generation of American boys' names was given. The -on ending arrived on Jaxon, Braxton, Kayson and their neighbors; attached here it converts a French romance name into something that looks like it was built in the same decade as the rest.

Where it comes from

Our story of Tryston

There is a stone in Cornwall, near Fowey, with a sixth-century inscription that reads, in worn Latin, that a Drustanus lies here, son of Cunomorus. Drustanus is the Celtic name that became Tristan; Cunomorus has been identified, on evidence that is suggestive rather than conclusive, with a Cornish ruler whose name appears in the romances as the hero's uncle. So a granite pillar in a field may be the grave marker of the man the story is about, six hundred years before anybody wrote the story down. It may equally be two unrelated men with the right names. The stone has been moved several times and is now beside a road.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The original name is Celtic and its meaning is not recoverable; the form everybody knows was reshaped by French scribes toward their word for sad, which is a pun rather than an etymology. Neither the y nor the changed ending in this spelling bears on the question, and no reading can be given.

How the name formed

  1. A Celtic name of unrecovered meaning
  2. Reshaped by French scribes toward their word for sad
  3. A romance hero across medieval Europe
  4. Tryston with a modern American ending

Tryston sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2005, with 79 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Tryston sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Welsh form uses the same y, so the spelling has real precedent.
  • The sound is entirely familiar and needs no coaching.
  • It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
What to consider
  • Tristan is the standard spelling and this will be corrected into it constantly.
  • The changed ending dates the spelling quite precisely.
  • No meaning can be given, because the original name has none.
