Where it comes from

Our story of Trung

The Trưng sisters led a rising against the Han administration in the first century, took a substantial number of citadels, ruled for about three years and were defeated. Vietnamese historiography has kept them at the center of the national story ever since: they appear in the earliest chronicles, there are temples to them, streets in every city carry their name, and their anniversary is marked. What makes them unusual is not only the rebellion but the record of who followed them, which includes a number of other women named as commanders. They are the first named figures in Vietnamese history, and they lost.

The Vietnamese word is written with a tone mark that American records strip, and more than one word collapses into these letters once it is gone. The commonest reading is loyalty or faithfulness.

Trung sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1981, with 45 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Trung sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable and five letters: quick to write and easy to learn.
  • It is immediately legible to a very large community and genuinely rare outside it.
  • It carries a documented history that a child can go and read about.
What to consider
  • The tone mark that completes the name is stripped by American paperwork.
  • English readers will say TRUNG with an English tr, which is not the sound.
  • Outside Vietnamese communities it will need explaining, and it will need the same sentence for life.
