Tristan was not originally sad. The Pictish name Drustan lies behind it, and it was French storytellers who reshaped the first syllable to match triste, their word for sorrowful, because the story they were telling required it. Tristyn is the American respelling, and its use on girls peaks in 2002.

The story of Tristyn
The Tristan and Iseult story is one of the great medieval European narratives, told in French, German, Norse and English versions from the twelfth century onward, and it fed directly into the Arthurian cycle. Its hero's name came from Pictish or Brittonic tradition and was reworked by the French poets who made the story famous, including the explicit folk etymology about sorrow. Wagner's opera of 1865 gave it a further life. The modern American given name is twentieth-century, mostly male, and its girls' use peaks in 2002 alongside Tristen and Trystan.
Meaningscholars disagree
from Pictish Drustan; reshaped by French 'sad'
The oldest form is Drustan, a diminutive of Drust, a Pictish royal name whose own meaning is not recoverable — Pictish is very poorly attested. French romancers rewrote it as Tristan and explicitly connected it to triste, 'sad', with the story explaining that the hero was born in sorrow. That reshaping is documented in the romances themselves. So the sadness is genuinely part of the name's history and demonstrably not its origin.

The Anglia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tristyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Anglia climbed just as high around 1966, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Anglia's path sketches the road Tristyn is walking now.
Tristyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
