Where it comes from

The story of Anglia

Medieval writers in Latin called England Anglia, and the word survives in East Anglia and in the names of universities and institutions. Ford took it up in 1939 for a small family car sold in Britain until the late sixties, and in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets an enchanted turquoise Ford Anglia flies Harry and Ron to Hogwarts and ends up living wild in the Forbidden Forest. As an American girl's name Anglia belongs to the middle of the twentieth century, when Angela was everywhere, and nothing records whether a given family meant the country or a variation on Angela.

The Latin name for England, or a variant of Angela

Anglia is Latin for 'land of the Angles', the people who gave England its name. American Anglias may instead be shaped from Angela or Angelia; the record does not say which.

Fashion outlook

Anglia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Easy to say, and close to Angela.
  • Carries a real Latin word with a long history.
  • Very rare, so an Anglia is unlikely to share her name.
What to consider
  • People will hear Angela or Angelia and write it that way.
  • British listeners will think of the Ford car, and Harry Potter readers of the flying one.
  • A name that means 'England' may raise eyebrows in Scotland, Wales or Ireland.
