The story of Triston
Tristan and Iseult is one of the great medieval romances, older than the Arthurian cycle it was absorbed into, and it runs through Béroul, Gottfried von Strassburg and eventually Wagner. The name entered wide English use only in the twentieth century, and the Triston respelling appears in American records from the 1980s, peaking around 2000.
Meaningscholars disagree
sad; noise, tumult
The name descends from the Pictish Drustan, from drust, possibly 'noise' or 'tumult'. Medieval French writers reshaped it toward triste, 'sad', because the story warranted it — a documented case of a name being altered to fit its bearer. Both elements are genuine parts of the history.

The Levar test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Triston's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Levar climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Levar's path sketches the road Triston is walking now.
Triston sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
